Well After the Fact Review: ROH: Glory by Honor V - Night 2

Well After the Fact Review - Wrestling DVD

Ring of Honor: Glory By Honor - Night 2
September 16, 2005

I won this DVD on an ebay auction in October. And I planned to have watched this before I went to see Glory by Honor VI Night 1 in Philadelphia, because I hadn't seen enough of KENTA or Marufuji's ring work. Well, that didn't quite happen (mostly cause I refuse to skip ahead in a wrestling DVD).

(By the way, not that anyone is reading, but I didn't, and still don't intend this to be a Ring of Honor blog, just kindof where my head is at the moment. It'll pass)

I don't do play-by-play, I'll link to several other reviewers at the bottom who are better at that kindof stuff.

Intro Vignette:

The Ring of Honor Champion stands outside of Madison Square Garden talking about the legends that have performed there, and walks about 1 block to the Manhattan Center and talks about the legends who are now appearing in Ring of Honor. This worked very well.
Opening Match:Davey Richards vs Jack Evans

Decent enough match. Purpose was to further prove that Davey can hang with the big boys of the promotion. To me this was decent, but was a mess. Both have talent, but they don't mesh with each other. Richards wins with the stretch muffler. Fun but nothing special.

Rating:**
Ceremony With Bruno Sammartino

Bruno Sammartino comes out with a well-received ovation from the Manhattan crowd. The funny part is that probably none of the crowd has ever seen a Bruno match. Well, other than the Bruno v. Zybsyco match, but that one doesn't count. It's like saying you've seen Steamboat v. Savage at WMIII. He thanks the crowd and puts over ROH, which the fans love, of course. After the ceremony, Samoa Joe starts something with (future ROH Champion) Takeshi Morishima, starting the Joe vs NOAH feud, that never quite happened. It's funny, seeing it now, wondering what could have happened.
Match 2: Adam Pearce vs Delirious

Both of these men got much better in 2007. A fair match with some funny comedy spots, especially when Delirious goes under the ring and when he nails Pearce with 50 clotheslines. I love that Delirious, playing an insane character, can do things that break the 'rules' of the match experience (like giving someone more than 10 shots in the corner), and the fans love him for it. Shane Hagadorn comes down to ringside and hits Delirious with brass knuckles, and Pearce follows that up with a vicious jumping piledriver... RUDE... Pearce and Hagadorn join forces (eventually leading to the Hangman's 3, but that's much later.

Rating:**
Match 3: Christopher Daniels vs Colt Cabana vs Jimmy Jacobs

This is much more like it. The story here is that Daniels is a face in Ring of Honor, for once in his life; Jacobs is still in love with Lacey; Cabana hooked up with Lacey and Jacobs found out about it; Lacey wants the two of them to team-up against Daniels, and Jacobs is too heartbroken to do it. High concept stuff or the latest episode of All My Ringrats? You be the judge.

It's bizzaro world as Daniels shakes hands with Cabana before the match. I'm a huge Cabana fan, as I love anyone who can wrestle and bring humor to the match. Cabana grabs Laceys boobs and looks up her skirt during the match, to the delight of the crowd. Most of this happens while Jacobs sulks in the corner. Too Funny. Back and forth action, with Cabana letting Jacobs get nailed by Daniels. Daniels has some nice moves in this match, of course. But in the end, Cabana is about to nail Daniels with the Colt 45, when Jacobs hits a low blow on Colt, and finishes him with the Contra Code. I'm a fan of this stuff. Very unique, translated well into a match, and lots of fun. Not a GREAT match wrestling-wise, but not bad either.

Rating:***
Promo Time: Jim Cornette & The Briscoes

Cornette is awesome at times, but this isn't one of them. Basically, the gist is that Homicide asked Cornette for a World Title shot. Cornette gives him the shot at Final Battle 2006 (cool I won that on an Ebay auction too!!!), but he has to win his match tonight. More insults for New York City before Homicide's music plays and Samoa Joe and Homicide hit the ring, leading us to....
Match 4: The Briscoe Brothers (Jay & Mark Briscoe) vs Homicide & Samoa Joe w/ Julius Smokes

Um, everyone in this match is awesome at this point. Okay, that's not true, Julius Smokes kindof sucks, but otherwise. Everyone brawls at first. Some of the best high-impact wrestling from Homicide that I've ever seen. Some great suplexes and throws. The basic story is that Joe and Homicide can dominate individually, but eventually the double-teaming of the Briscoes takes over. Homicide finally finishes the whole thing with a Cop Killah on Jay for the victory. I don't like Joe in brawls like this, but he certainly holds his own. Best Homicide match I've ever seen. Briscoes are awesome as always.

Rating:***1/2
Intermission:
Three backstage vignettes. I went through these quickly as I wanted to get to the action.

  • Cabana is backstage with Lacey icing his balls when Jacobs comes in celebrating. Lacey rips him for pinning Cabana.
  • Something weird with KENTA, not sure the purpose, to be honest.
  • Bruno backstage with Danielson and Marufuji. Congratulating them both... Moving on.
Match 5: ROH World Tag Team Title Match: Austin Aries & Roderick Strong vs The Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli)

Only thing I like worse than Claudio as a face is Claudio as a heel, even dumber. Okay, he's Swiss, so naturally he wears a tie to the ring and carries a briefcase? And he's with a wrestler with superhero inspired tights? And they call themselves Kings? Uck!

On the flipside, Personal Jesus is heard over the speakers and I'm a happy man. Here come the champs!

Back and forth matchup. Some classic good guy versus bad guy tag stuff, but the Kings are sloppy and Gen Next are artists, so it's crap to me. Hero and Cladio do nothing impressive for me. The whole point of the match is that the Kings need to cheat to gain any advantage over the superior team of Aries and Strong. In the end, Claudio hits Aries in the ribs with the briefcase, and Hero hits his finisher on Strong. Kings hit a double-team finisher to pin Aries for the win and the belts.

Rating:**

After the match, an injured BJ Whitmer tells Jacobs to watch his ass, cause he's coming back for him.
Match 6: GHC Heavyweight Title Match: Naomichi Marufuji vs Nigel McGuinness

Marufuji is accompanied by lots of other Japanese officials. McGuinness is hot over. And the ring announer makes a big deal of reading the official sanctioning by NOAH of the GHC Heavyweight Title match occuring in the United States. Adds something to the match, not sure what, but it adds something.

The match was solid. I enjoy Nigel's unique brawling style. Reminds me of a very tall Steve Austin with better movement around the ring. I know this surprises no one who follows NOAH, but Marufuji is awesome!!!! Amazing wrestler. He's like Muta and Van Dam rolled up into 1. Skill versus high impact is the basic story of this one. Nigel hits his moves: Lariats, Headstand in the corner, Tower of London. Marufuji takes all of them. Marufuji hits Nigel with kicks from everywhere. Eventually, Marufuji hits a move called a Shiranui (basically a Sliced Bread #2 with both men on the top turnbuckle) to win. I very much enjoyed this match.

Rating: ****
Main Event: ROH World Title Match: Bryan Danielson vs KENTA

Kenta comes down to the ring with all of the NOAH wrestlers that came on this trip. Danielson walks alone ("It's the FINAL COUNTDOWWWWWNNNNN!!!!!!). Please forgive, but I'm just not going to capitalize Kenta everytime in this match. I know it is a term of respect, and so that no one confuses him with Kenta Kobashi. But I'm going to continue with Kenta, until Kobashi comes down to ringside.

Fun feeling out process. Danielson is such a throwback to 80s wrestling, it's wonderful. I would love to have Danielson face Flair, just for the first 5-6 minutes (the rest might suck). Danielson's shoulder has tape on it, mostly to remind the audience that it is injured. Kenta attacks the shoulder all match. Danielson feels the sharks swimming around his title reign, and will do anything to kepep the title.

Danielson and Kenta have a nice brawling section of the match on the outside of the ring, neither man gaining a true upper-hand. The back and forth in this match is great. Danielson ducks a great move, and rolls through to get a single leg crab. Over-and-over Kenta attacks the arm of Danielson, but Danielson keeps coming back.

Danielson gets Kenta in a roaring elbow, follows it with a crossface chickenwing. Fans are screaming, "Tap", but Kenta does not. Just tremendous action. Back and forth, these two warrior give everything they have. Towards the end of this 30 minute match, Kenta nails Danielson with the Go To Sleep, and covers him. The crowd is pumped so much, they almost don't see the referee stop the count to Danielson's foot on the ropes. Awesome stuff. Danielson hits his series of elbows to the face on Kenta and puts him in the Cattle Mutilation for the submission victory. AWESOME!

Maybe the best match that I've seen in Ring of Honor (I've missed most of the truly great ones, so just let it go).

Rating:***** (Full monty!!!)

Overall rating:

I really enjoyed this card. Kenta earned his reputation with me with this match. I keep trying to find a great Hero or Claudio match, and still haven't found it. Whatever Kool-Aid is out there, I haven't found it to drink. I love Joe and Homicide vs Briscoes, and had a lot of fun with the three way match. Worth picking up for full price, and if you can get it in a deal, even better.

Overall Grade: B+

Pick it up here.

Keys to the Kingdom

Yesterday, Marvel Comics announced that they would be opening their archives to online subscribers, for a price of $9.95 per month or $59.95 per year.

If I am reading this article (and all subsequent articles) correctly... for an average of six dollars a month, I (as a comic book fan) would get:

  • Access to classic Marvel comic book series, such as the early Lee & Kirby Fantastic Four and Lee and Ditko Spider-Man comics.

  • Access to recent high-profile Marvel comic book series, such as Whedon's Astonishing X-Men and The Ultimates (which I have read, but I'm sure other high-profile series are to be included.)

  • New issues will be on the Marvel site six months after they are published in comic book form.

I had three reactions....

1. Thank you Jesus (or which ever one of you did this).

This is a dream come true, and I'm not a Marvel guy. I'd much prefer the same from DC (especially if they include Vertigo... or include it as an add-on). I mean, there are so many stories that I want to read, but I don't know that it's worth shelling out 15 bucks just to read a story. If Marvel consistently puts every comic that they publish on their online site, this couldn't be better for me.

As I've stated, I've crossed over to the trade paperback side. If I was buying comic books, this wouldn't stop me from buying individual issues, tho I might leave a few things on the shelves, knowing that I could check them out 6 months later.

My only question, is what is this going to do to their trade paperback market. Sure, this won't affect people who just occassionally wander into Borders and grab a trade. But I have to think that fewer readers are going to buy the trades, unless Marvel really starts releasing the trades earlier. (Like, imagine a six month story arch, beginning in January, ending in June.... June the last title is released to the comic book store, July the first title is released online, August, the trade is released).

But I really don't care.

2. That's all they're going to charge me?

When I thought about digital comics, I envisioned a iTunes like application, or a subscription service that allowed you to view a specific number of comic books a month. (I had it down as 10 comic books for $10.00). Boy, did Marvel exceed my expectations there. They must envision a LOT of sales with this.

I was envisioning 10 bucks for access to 10 comics, and Marvel blew the doors open, granting access to their entire library for 10 bucks, or 60 if you want to sign up for the whole year. Are you F'N kidding me? Six bucks a month is worth it for failed/old 80s and 90s Marvel comics series (i.e., Micronauts, Rom The Space Night, The New Universe,), let alone the good stuff.

I mean I'm not complaining. This is probably a low price so that kids can wheedle the money out of their folks. But still, I'd be willing to pay more.

3. What is DC's response going to be

I'm really surprised to hear nothing from DC as of yet. No reporter or comic book service has gotten a response from Dido and company? Come on. DC had to know this was coming. And if they don't think this is a good business venture, that's great, but tell us why you think that.

Maybe DC is getting more off of the trade market than marvel, or they don't want to open the Vertigo archives for everyone. I'm not sure. I am VERY surprised that there has been NO response, and the story has been out there for a bit.

But overall, couldn't be more pleased. Great stuff. This makes my house much more uncluttered, and I'm much less likely to buy trades on a whim.

ROH: Faction Wars Analysis - No Remorse Corps

I'm an old school wrestling fan, so I dig managers and stables. I remember the old days when Bobby Heenan had the Heenan Family (Andre, Rude, Haku, Arn Anderson, & Tully Blanchard), Jimmy Hart had his collection of wrestlers (Honky, Valentine, Bravo, Earthquake, & The Rougeaus), and even Slick came up with a decent group (Boss Man, Akeem, The Bolsheviks, & The Warlord).

So, it hearkens back to those old days to think about the current faction wars in Ring of Honor. Ring of Honor has a Trios tournament on December 1st in Chicago, which will determine the dominant stable in Ring of Honor. So, before we get there, let's take a look at each group, starting with the No Remorse Corps:

No Remorse Corps (NRC)

Members:

  • Roderick Strong: Leader of the NRC, and current holder of the Full Impact Pro Heavyweight Championship. ROH veteran since September, 2003. Former member of Generation Next. By turning heel on Austin Aries, Strong kicked off the Gen Next War.

  • Rocky Romero: Cuban wrestler known in ROH for being a member of the Rottweilers and the Havana Pitbulls, but also known internationally for being the fourth incarnation of Black Tiger. Debuted in Ring of Honor in April, 2004. Solid worker and second in popularity behind Roderick.

  • Davey Richards: NRC’s most recent addition to ROH, Davey arrived in June 2006. Has been the utility man in the NRC, assisting Strong and Romero in tag matches. Seen as the weakest member of NRC, but has benefited the most from membership.

Founded:

February 16, 2007 - Roderick Strong attacked his partner Austin Aries following a match with Christopher Daniels and Matt Sydal. Davey Richards joined him that night, and Rocky Romero joined in later weeks.

Purpose:

Success. To win the Generation Next wars. To dominate Ring of Honor with no remorse. Basically, a win at all costs attitude.

Status:

The oldest stable in Ring of Honor is in a bit of a holding pattern. Currently in a bit of a tween mode, but leaning more towards heel. Favorites from a wrestling standpoint to win the Trios Tournament.

Upcoming Signed Matches:

  • December 1: Trios Tournament
  • December 30: No Remorse Corps (Strong, Romero, & Richards) vs The Vulture Squad (Evans, Ruckus, & Jigsaw) - Brooklyn Street Fight

Current Record as a Stable:

33 wins, 31 losses, 0 no decisions

Accomplishments and Key Victories:

  • February 16: Roderick Strong formed the NRC with Davey Richards, turning on Austin Aries
  • March 31: Rocky Romero joins the NRC
  • April 13: No Remorse Corps (Roderick Strong, Rocky Romero, & Davey Richards) defeat The Resilience (Austin Aries, Erick Stevens, & Matt Cross)
  • May 2: Chases Austin Aries out of the promotion and dominates both the Resilience and Jack Evans in his absence.
  • August 11: No Remorse Corps (Roderick Strong, Rocky Romero, & Davey Richards) & Matt Sydal defeat The Resilience (Austin Aries, Erick Stevens, & Matt Cross) & Delirious
  • October 21: Roderick Strong defeats Claudio Castagnoli
  • November 3: No Remorse Corps (Roderick Strong, Rocky Romero, & Davey Richards) defeated Vulture Squad (Jack Evans, Jigsaw, & Ruckus)
  • Won the Generation Next war against the Resilience.
  • NRC continues to ensure that Roderick retains the FIP World Title.

Comments:

The NRC is the most successful long-term stable in ROH at the moment, but this is somewhat by default. The departure of Austin Aries from the promotion during the late spring/early summer months, and the absence of Jack Evans from ROH, had Roderick’s team win the opening salvos of the Generation Next war by default. When Aries and Evans returned. The NRC continued to be successful as a whole, but both Aries and Evans each got individual revenge on Strong.

To me, the NRC is at a crossroads. They’ve been the dominant heel stable in Ring of Honor for most of 2007. They have a dominant leader in Strong, and good talent in Romero and Richards. But, most would say that The Age of the Fall is becoming the dominant heel stable in ROH.

At this point, none of the NRC seem primed to capture belts in Ring of Honor. Roderick Strong has held the FIP Title for over a year now, but I don’t think you can’t count that as a secondary title in ROH, until you can believe that it can change hands.

Prediction for 2008

Barring any changes to the current structure in ROH, I predict that the NRC disbands, turns face, or has a major defection/reorganization in 2008.

Well After the Fact Review: Ultimates Vol. 1

Well After the Fact Review - Comic Book/Trade Paperback

Marvel Comics - The Ultimates Volume 1: Super-Human
Originally Released: August 2002

I’m getting worse with trade paperbacks, than I ever was with comic books. I go to the store and next thing you know I’m loading up with $100.00 + of trades.

Now, when I purchase trades, usually I look for stories that I haven’t read, or that I only read a few of the issues. However, sometimes I look to replace individual issues with a bound version. That was the case with Ultimates Volume 1.

Back in 2002, I read the first several issues of The Ultimates. It was enjoyable, but it’s infrequent publishing schedule annoyed me. So, basically, I bought Ultimates Volume 1, so I could go and get Ultimates Volume 2. And for $12.99, it was a decent price for a good comic book.

Synopsis: With the emergence of superheroes, such as Spider-Man and the X-Men, in the Ultimate Universe, Nick Fury is attempting to create a United States sponsored superhero team. He teams with billionaire industrialist, Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man; hires Henry & Janet Pym as scientists who are able to use growth and shrinking powers, and are the heroes known as Giant-Man and Wasp; and enlists Bruce Banner, a government scientist who is trying to unlock the secrets of the Super Soldier formula, used to create Captain America in the 1940s. (Previous attempts to duplicate the formula turned Banner into the Hulk)

Just as the team is being assembled, S.H.I.E.L.D. finds the frozen body of Captain America, kept alive by the Super Soldier formula. Fury and the rest of the team attempt to acclimate Steve Rogers into the 21st century. Additionally, Banner and Fury go to recruit a man, who claims to be the norse god, Thor. But their recruitment effort is unsuccessful.

As public support diminishes for The Ultimates, Bruce Banner tests a new Super Soldier Serum on himself, hoping to duplicate previous efforts and wanting to create a situation that makes the Ultimates necessary. Banner transforms into the Hulk, and forces the Ultimates team to take him down. During the battle, Thor joins the team, having been promised assistance in environmental isses. The team is able to battle the Hulk, and capture him as Bruce Banner.

Writing & Plotting: Written by Mark Millar. A lot of nothing happens for a while in this book. It makes it more modern, but in a sense a lot of the whimsical nature of comic books is lost here. Four issues are used to set up and introduce the team. However, the work is very effective. And if you're looking for an adult, rational, look at super-heroes in a modern world, this is it. There’s a sense of giving the heroes more adult problems here, such as jealousy, sexual morays, creative burn-out, political compromise, and public relation. As someone in his 30s, I appreciate the realistic nature of this. However, a part of me misses the simplistic comics of 15 years ago, where this was never the main part of the story. As the threat is from within the group (Ultimate Hulk), the story can remain very insular. You get a sense of the characters, and that is somewhat reflective and derivative of the original Marvel Characters (i.e., the domestic abuse between The Pyms). But all, in all, the writing in this trade is done very well. B+

Art: For me, there are four levels of art in comic books. Wow, Interesting, OK, and Sucks. For me, the art is OK. But most comic book art is OK. I'm sure there are nuances that I cannot appreciate, as I tend to be story-driven. But, if I don't really notice it, then it's OK. My opinion of Bryan Hitch's work in Ultimates is just that, OK. There are certainly no flaws, the characters are distinct and consistent. The backgrounds are solid, and give the proper perspective between characters and surroundings. There is a gritty tone to the color, which I’m sure is on purpose. But nothing about the art, makes it Pop. It is interesting, in the fact that it is very gritty and the colors are quite muted, compared to classic George Perez Avengers. But, no complaints. B-

Judgement: Good but not great story to set-up the premiere super-hero organization in the Ultimate Universe. The grittiness and realistic characterization, defines the Ultimate Universe in a way that Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men do not. Not something I would want in hardcover, though.

Overall Grade: B

Easily found on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Ebay, or your favorite comic book shop

Ring of Honor: Glory By Honor VI - Night 1

Okay, I went to Glory By Honor in Philly. Was a pretty good show, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I had a good seat. The action was solid. The crowd was pretty good (I'll get to that later). And it was just fun. Probably the best show I've been to since ECW closed. (I had more fun at Hardcore Homecoming, but that was really in a different category).

First off, I'd have to say that the Philadelphia National Guard Armory is pretty decent, for something like this. It's tough to find a good venue. Sure I'd rather it be at the Alahambra, but what can you do. But the parking situation was lousy. Getting in and getting out. I drove around the building twice before I figured out which back lot in the middle of nowhere I was supposed to park in. It wasn't a place where you would want someone walking by themselves, in my opinion.

The venue seemed cramped for all that you want from a show like this. Small/tight gimmick and food tables. Tough to get in and out of the rows, and the like.

The crowd was one of the most respectful I've seen in quite some time. You didn't have that "I'm going to ruin the show to get myself over" influence. I like heckling and chants. But there are people who chant "boring" or "we want blood" or other such nonsense, and it can ruin a show. That said, there was a general hangover feeling throughout the crowd, me included. They responded to matches, but the enthusiasm died out a few times, despite the crowd liking it. It was weird. Like everyone had stayed out til 2:00 AM the previous night.

Hangmen 3 (BJ Whitmer & Brent Albright) vs Kevin Steen & El Generico

Not a bad match. Boy to the fans hate Whitmer. And I can't believe how skinny and how pale Generico is. He makes Danielson look like George Hamilton. Steen is over like crazy with the fans. Solid brawling and aerial moves. Steen & Generico get a suprise victory (cause I figured a H3 push and rumors of Steen needing time off). Then Hagadorn threw 20 pounds of powder into the face of Steen and Generico (and all over himself and the ring). The Hangmen then gave Steenerico a beat down.

Claudio Castagnoli vs Hallowicked

Average match. People love Castagnoli. I just don't see it. He is an average wrestler, at best, to me. Yet, they talk about him like he's going to be a ROH World Champion some day. Aereal versus grappler match, but neither was remarkable. Enjoyable though. Claudio finishes with an uppercut. At the end, Larry Sweeney offers to buy out Claudio's contract if he leaves. He refuses, of course.

Davey Richards vs Delirious

Philly does not like Delirious, at all. I did not get the sense of the pop that Delirious received on the Driven PPV. Richards was funny in how he reacted to the crowd, a lot of inside jokes with the crowd. Decent match, but neither man brought anything special.

The Briscoes vs Roderick Strong & Rocky Romero

Very good match. Philly loves the Briscoes. Mark Briscoe has really gotten better in the last year or so. Both of them have gained a huge amount of muscle mass (somewhat suspiciously, but who knows). Romero is much smaller than the other three. I enjoy Strong's work, but he is not showcasing his talents like he did in 2005-2006. Great physical confrontation. Slight tease that the NRC was going to defeat the Briscoes, but in the end Briscoes hit the Road Warriors finisher to win.

After the match is over, the Age of the Fall interrupt and attack the Briscoes. I'm very disappointed in the Age of the Fall. They're turning into just another stable. Nowhere near the insight or captivation of Raven's Nest or even The Prophecy.

Age of the Fall (Jimmy Jacobs, Tyler Black, Necro Butcher) vs The Vulture Squad (Jack Evans, Ruckus, & Jigsaw)

Great high-flying match. Tyler Black is a future superstar. He is huge compared to everyone else in this match. Jigsaw and Julius Smokes seem VERY out of place though. Ruckus is a great wrestler, who I loved when I first saw him in CZW back when they were on television. Jack Evans has had better matches, and Jimmy Jacobs was unmemorable. Necro is insane. Great in ring persona. Fans love him. Jacobs hit the Contra Code and then a submission hold on Jigsaw (I think) to win.

After the match, the entire locker room from the previous matches (other than Claudio & Hallowicked) all came down and had a huge battle. With all of the wrestlers hitting their over the top rope splashes onto the crowd. Normally, I hate this. It's stupid to think that wrestlers are just standing around waiting to get splashed, but since the match was over, I enjoyed it more.

Intermission, I ate a really average slice of tomato pie. But I was starving, so it rocked.

Mitch Franklin vs Ernie Osiris

The typical, come back from the bathroom match. These are two young wrestlers from the ROH school. Osiris started to get some support from the crowd (tho he's really ugly), and he defeated Franklin in an upset. Fine for what it was

Austin Aries vs Bryan Danielson

This was the match I came to see. Crowd popped for both, with a slight edge for Dragon. I'm an Aries fan myself, tho I like Dragon. Great back and forth action. Danielson dominated on the mat, but Aries always was able to pull out some high-impact and aereal maneuvers. Aries even turned the tables on Danielson, and gave him the Cattle Mutilation.

This match was much better than the Danielson vs McGuinness match from Driven, in my opinion. It just felt like it needed 5 more minutes to be a classic, instead of really good. In the middle of the match, Danielson dominated for like 8-10 minutes. Aries turned the tide, and dominated for 3-5 minutes, when he pinned Danielson with the 450 splash. It really felt like there should have been a period where both men got to the desperate stage, and were at their last legs from exhaustion, before Aries pulls it out. The ending felt a little flukey and out of nowhere.

But it was a good match. It just felt like it was so close to being a great match, that there was still something left in the ring. **** 1/4 out of *****. Definately one of the 10 best matches I've ever seen live.

Impromptu Match: Chris Hero vs Nigel McGuinness

Hero comes down and declares that he gets a title shot tonight, despite Nigel being injured. This angle felt like it needed an authority figure for Hero and Sweeney to rally against. The angle is very old school, and I liked it fine. Nigel and Hero had a pretty average to bad match, with a strong tease that Hero was going to win the title, due to Nigel's injury. But I certainly appreciated that Nigel wanted to perform for one of the biggest ROH weekends of the year.

I don't get why the crowd loves Hero. I like him due to the old school/throwback aspect of his character. But once he starts wrestling, he seems average at best. I just don't get it at all.

Main Event: Mitsuharu Misawa & KENTA vs Takeshi Morishima & Naomichi Marufuji

Okay, this match was half exhibition and half awesome wrestling. Misawa is old and cannot keep up with the other three men in this match. But imagine the opportunity to see a two-on-two basketball exhibition where Michael Jordan teams with Dwayne Wade to play Kobe Bryant and Lebron James. Yes, he can't play with them anymore, but you'd still want to see it.

KENTA and Marufuji are really REALLY REALLY f'n good. Just amazing. I have to see more of their work in ROH. Morishima is a bulldozer, unlike any other wrestler I've seen (that's neither good nor bad). All three can go. Misawa gave some great moves that he could, but he got winded quickly, and left the work to the younger wrestlers.

It went to a 30 minute draw. Now, I don't understand this. There's no heat to lose. And wouldn't you want Marufuji to win, so you build intrigue for the Marufuji vs Misawa match on Saturday in NYC? I didn't get that. I could understand a 30 minute draw between Misawa and an ROH wrestler, why have either lose heat. But here, it made little sense, and made the crowd react to the draw, which isn't how you want to end the show.

But over all, a good match, but no drama to it.

Had a great time. Not sure if this translates to DVD, but I think if you get it, you would be very happy with it.

Recommended (when it comes out), but not strongly.
